La communauté urbaine a pris le statut de Métropole le 1er janvier 2012 après fusion avec les communautés de communes de la Tinée, des stations du Mercantour, de Vésubie Mercantour et de la commune de la Tour. Une évolution majeure qui fait suite à une longue construction de l’intercommunalité initiée depuis de nombreuses années.
La création du statut de Métropole en 2012 vise à faire des principales agglomérations françaises les pôles de développement majeurs de l’Hexagone. Elle leur confère un pouvoir d’action élargi pour mieux coordonner l’action publique et accompagner la dynamique de leur territoire, en leur permettant d’exercer pleinement leur rôle en matière de développement économique, de soutien à l’emploi, d’innovation, de transition énergétique ou de solidarité.
La Métropole est un nouvel Etablissement Public de Coopération Intercommunale (EPCI), créé par la Loi n° 2010-1563 du 16 décembre 2010, sur la réforme des collectivités territoriales puis confirmé par la loi n°2014-58 du 27 janvier 2014 de modernisation de l’Action Publique Territoriale et d’Affirmation des Métropoles. La loi n°2015-991 du 7 août 2015 portant nouvelle organisation territoriale de la République a précisé certaines des positions relatives aux compétences des métropoles.
La Métropole constitue un territoire d’un seul tenant et sans enclave et doit comporter plus de 500.000 habitants.
Après la création des Communautés de Communes, des Communautés d’Agglomération et des Communautés Urbaines, la Métropole vise à renforcer l’intercommunalité dans notre pays, où toutes les communes doivent obligatoirement faire partie d’un EPCI depuis le 01/07/2013.

- Encourage diversity among my service providers, particularly in relation to disability issues
- Measure the energy consumption and impact of my Information System (multi-criteria analysis)
- Avoid unnecessary energy consumption e.g. by switching off at night, weekends and holidays
- Favouring low-impact energy sources
- Plan the archiving and cleaning of data with its teams to reduce their environmental footprint
- Measure the impact of its digital services (e.g. frequency of use or energy consumption) using a multi-criteria and global approach to the entire service (equipment, servers, networks, etc.)
- Ensure the development of useful and efficient digital services
- Reduce the environmental impact of its services: weight of images, videos, plugins, by favouring simpler or less energy-consuming solutions
- Make its digital services accessible to as many people as possible (even in the event of poor connection quality, disability, etc.)
- Facilitate the proper semantic understanding of its digital services in a clear and educational language
- Ensure diversity in the recruitment of IS teams (initial and continuing training, diversity of training, origins, disability status)
- Encourage gender diversity in the digital field at all levels
- Promote work-life balance by, for example, respecting the right to disconnect and arranging for teleworking measures
- Making anonymised data available to enable the development of innovative services that can benefit users and citizens
- Favour the use of local and European tools in order to encourage the consolidation of players who respect the sovereignty of European data
- Develop in open source to enable virtuous emulation of its ecosystem
